Plinth

What it is

Plinth is a free, open-source desktop video downloader for YouTube and 2000+ sites. Save videos up to 4K HDR, extract MP3 audio, sync playlists, and download subtitles — 100% local, no ads, no accounts.

I built Plinth, a free, open-source desktop video downloader that saves videos from YouTube and 2000+ sites. Paste a link, pick a format, choose a folder, and keep the file — no ads, no accounts, no upsells.

Problem

Most video downloaders are ad-ridden, paywalled, or quietly harvest your data. I wanted a tool that respects the user: fully local, transparent, and free forever.

What I built

  • Downloads from YouTube and 2000+ sites via yt-dlp, up to 4K HDR 60fps
  • Audio extraction to MP3, AAC, and Opus
  • Bulk URLs, playlist sync, and subtitles in SRT, VTT, and ASS
  • SponsorBlock, smart quality modes, and a global hotkey (Ctrl+Shift+D)
  • 100% local processing, 30 languages, MIT licensed
  • One-command installs: winget, Scoop, Homebrew, Flatpak, AppImage

Result

Plinth launched as a free open-source app with a public site and docs. It gives anyone a private, no-nonsense way to save the videos they watch.
